FRIDA DOES FLAMENCO

ORIGINAL FEATURE SCREENPLAY · DRAMEDY

Coming of age in middle age.

A fifty-something New York creative director, wife and mother, reeling from hot flashes and a humiliating demotion, quits her job and escapes to Granada to learn flamenco. An affair, a viral humiliation and a riotous family showdown follow as she fights to reclaim herself.

THE STORY

It's Frida's 52nd birthday, and life has become one long exercise in being overlooked. At work, she's been demoted to make room for someone half her age. At home, her sons are pulling away and her husband barely seems to notice her.

After a spectacular family row, Frida reaches breaking point. Chasing a spark from an accidental flamenco class, she leaves New York behind and heads to Granada, Spain.

Immersed in the world of flamenco, she begins to find her rhythm again. But just as she earns the chance to perform a solo at the student show, an ill-advised flirtation and a humiliating social-media post turn her new life into a very public joke.

When her husband and sons arrive in Granada, old grievances collide with new ambitions. Frida must decide whether to abandon the life she left behind or find a way to make room for the woman she is becoming.

A PERSONAL CONNECTION

Frida Does Flamenco is my love letter to flamenco, Granada and Andalusia.

My own journey into flamenco began in midlife, at a moment when I was struggling with many of the same questions as Frida. What began as a dance class became an unexpected awakening, and eventually the inspiration for this film.

I wanted to tell a story about a woman who refuses to disappear quietly. A comedy about ageing, changing, family and the messy business of starting again.
